Zahi Wehbe
The Cadmus Cultural Forum, affiliated with the Zgharta Zawieh Youth Movement, hosted the poet Zahi Wehbe at the Al-Khair and Inma Foundation Center in Zgharta, in the presence of local civil associations and a crowd of interested attendees.
Pierre Douaihy
At the beginning, Pierre Morkos El Douaihy, President of the Zgharta Zawieh Youth Movement, said: “At a table overlooking the sea in a Beirut café, poet Zahi Wehbe responded to our invitation with a single word: ‘I am honored.’ He said it was his honor to be in Zgharta reading his poems before asking how, where, why, and when. This is the refined poet and distinguished media figure we have known and met today, who lit up the region even before taking the podium to share his poems of freedom and love. The evening’s atmosphere was further graced by the presence of his wife, the beloved television personality and media figure Rabia Zayyat.”
He announced that “the Cadmus Cultural Forum emerged from the Zgharta-El Zawieh Youth Movement to open a space for cultural and intellectual encounter during a time of cultural, intellectual, and social decline in terms of values and ideals.”
Robert Frangieh
Media figure Robert Frangieh spoke, saying:
“This is not the first time I have introduced tonight’s guest as a poet and media personality.
From the annual Tripoli Book Fair in an evening that blended amateur and professional poetry, to Microscope during the days of ‘Khalleek Bel Beit’ (Stay at Home), and just as on television, so it was on the radio when he moved from Future TV to Al Mayadeen with ‘Bayt Al Qaseed’ (House of Poetry), leading up to today in my region of Zgharta with the owner of the house of poetry and homes of poems, Zahi Wehbe.
Any introduction for the guest of the Cadmus Cultural Forum will come across as ordinary and dim, no matter how carefully we select and weave the fabric of our words, stitch them on paper of appreciation, and tune them to the string of affection.
Zahi Wehbe, with whom I crossed paths in opening the notebooks of the good old days—whose pages have yellowed, waiting to be revisited to benefit from the talents of stars who retired or withdrew yet remain present through their voices, no matter how far they moved from the stage.
Stars of yesterday’s sweet past, to whom Zahi opened his heart and the halls of television, debunking the saying that ‘the forgiving and massive audience wants it this way.’ Who holds an exclusive power of attorney from the public to speak on their behalf? And how could Zahi, who wrote songs for the greats and authentic voices, surrender to songs that are listened to with one’s feet, leaving ears only for the speeches of ‘political houses,’ as the poet friend Henri Zoghaib put it?
No matter what I write about Zahi Wehbe, the introduction written by the great poet Said Akl for his book ‘Tatamarrayu Li’ (Adorning Herself for Me) will jump out before me. Said Akl wrote a testimony unlike any other back then, considering the nobility of Zahi’s writing in essays and poetry to be an inheritance from his mother, who bestowed all this beauty upon his texts. Said Akl considered Zahi Wehbe a Lebanese treasure in poetry and prose.
Any introduction today for tonight’s guest will not compete with Rabia Zayyat’s introduction in ‘Kahwa Sadeh’ (Black Coffee, on the Beirut café scene). Would the competition between us and Rabia be fair in our love for Zahi or our passion for his poems? Even if we share this admiration, she is the life partner.
Despite that, Zahi’s partner felt a sense of jealousy from another competitor: the café itself. In it, she saw a female rival whom she envied for the poet’s intense, daily desire to visit it.
This is not Zahi Wehbe’s first time in Zgharta Zawieh. We previously shared cups of friendly coffee at the Meidan square before he became, at Al Mayadeen, an observer and focal point for the arenas of thought, ink, voice, and echo.
Welcome, Zahi Wehbe, to Zgharta Zawieh, where every village has birthed a poet and a writer. Sbae’l brought Asaad Al-Sbae’li and Youssef Rouhana; Mziara brought Youssef Younes and Younes Al-Ebn; Karmsaddeh brought Joseph Tobia; Raskifa brought Youssef Al-Nae’mi; Kfarzaina brought Albert Harb; Kfardlaqos brought Ghantous Nakad; Toula brought Mikhael Farah; Ehden brought George Yammine; and Zgharta brought Antoine Al-Kawwal, Boulos Al-Douaihy, Father Mikhael Mouawad, and many others.
I have listed some names of poets and writers who have passed away physically, but as for today’s living poets and writers, the convoy is very long—perhaps longer than your commute from Beirut to Zgharta in traffic, which for us tonight is a crowd of goodness.
Zahi Wehbe, there are many poets who write beautifully but whose voices do not serve them well. There are also many poets who recite poetry with grandeur but do not know how to write. You belong to the blessed minority gifted with both writing and recitation. We envy your luck, so let us listen to you tonight, as everyone here feels: I sell my time to whoever buys time… and I add: and I free myself from all appointments to listen to Zahi Wehbe in poems of love and freedom.“
Conclusion
In turn, Wehbe spoke, recalling an old poetry evening he held in Ehden, expressing his gratitude to the forum for the warm invitation and to the attending audience for their affection.
He then recited poems from several of his collections and publications for under an hour, moving beyond the event’s theme of love and freedom to cover motherhood, women, romance, and poetry, with the audience asking for more.
At the conclusion, Douaihy presented Wehbe with the forum’s shield as a token of appreciation for his presence.
